The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends that all medical schools provide an opportunity for students to participate in a student-run organization, such as a family medicine interest group. FMIGs allow students to cultivate their interest in and promote the value of family medicine through community service, mentorship, professional development and leadership. The AAFP encourages medical school administrations, departments of family medicine, family medicine residency programs, state and local chapters, and community stakeholders to support local FMIGs structurally and financially.
