Rural FPs Discuss 2008 Scientific Assembly

9/21/2008 9:01 PM
Fellow Physicians,
I just returned from the national AAFP meeting in San Diego. I find that the isolation that I experience as a rural family physician requires that I seek being around colleagues and association and learning from them. This year the meeting was well organized and well planned, as usual, but also outstanding in content and surprises. This was the first year of The Face of Disease and I have to say, if those presentations were all that I attended, it was well worth the time and money of traveling to San Diego. What an impact that the experiences of Patty Duke, Nicole Johnson, and James (Butch) Rosser, Jr., M.D. made on me! I must admit that I cried quite a few tears (I am pretty emotional) during each presentation. What a tremendous benefit it is that as a family physician, I can help improve the lives of people who are suffering. Especially in rural America, what an impact we can make!

I am very glad that I went to the AAFP conference in San Diego. I feel so revitalized and refreshed!
Thank you to our academy!
Shari Thompson, M.D.

Shari: As a delegate representing the rural state of Alaska, I appreciate hearing how the Scientific Assembly was perceived by other rural docs. I also felt that the streamlined and new approach for the assembly was revitalizing. Even seeing the diversity of companies exhibiting this year, from Quaker Oats to SAS shoes to cold laser to nutriceuticals to recruiting firms seemed more appropriate for rural
practice needs. Thanks for your comments!

Dr. Thompson,
I have attended the Scientific Assembly after serving as delegate from Nebraska for the past nine years and agree I always come back with a new found enthusiasm for my profession and new ideas for my practice. What a great CME to attend with other like minded family physicians designed for the many challenges we face as family physicians.
