Welcome home, rural family doctors! You now have an online "community" designed just for you by the AAFP. The Rural Online Community, which launched July 7, is packed with features for rural FPs, as well as for family medicine residents, medical students and others interested in rural family medicine.

With this new resource, rural FPs can stay on top of news that's important to them and their patients. They can share information with one another. They also can access other resources to support quality rural health care.

The Rural Online Community features
  • links to headlines from national and local publications on topics of interest to rural FPs, as well as access to the CMS Quarterly Provider Update and news releases;
  • an e-mail discussion list for community members;
  • an online library community members can use to post resources to share with others;
  • rural FP profiles, giving rural FPs a chance to learn about one another and giving individuals considering a career in rural medicine a glimpse into the lives of rural FPs;
  • updates on pertinent legislative issues;
  • a calendar of events for rural FPs across the country; and
  • rural health resources on topics including reimbursement, coding, practice management and AAFP policies.
The online community is a pilot project developed in response to a recommendation from the AAFP Board of Directors. By no means a static site, the online community is expected to grow and develop depending on the involvement and contributions of the rural FPs who use it.
