During medical emergencies, medical care is safer and more appropriate if information about an individual's medical history, including medical conditions, drug allergies, current medications, and Do Not Resuscitate orders (if applicable), is available. Therefore, the American Academy of Family Physicians recommends that clinicians encourage all individuals to carry their medical identification and information in a manner immediately and easily accessible to emergency personnel. The information may be stored in medical alert bracelets, necklaces, wallets, and medical identification or patient portal apps on smartphones. (1973) (October 2023 COD)
