March 28, 2025, News Staff — On March 27, HHS announced a significant reorganization, in line with a broader, government-wide exercise aimed at restructuring the role of federal agencies.
“This staffing reduction is different from workforce cuts announced earlier this year — it is the largest reorganization in HHS’ history and will fundamentally alter its operations,” David Tully, the AAFP’s vice president of Government Relations, said. “How exactly remains an open question."
AAFP Executive Vice President and CEO Shawn Martin said, “The AAFP is quickly analyzing the plan as presented and working to evaluate the new structure against our longstanding priorities. For now, I want to assure members that the Academy is committed to understanding how such changes will affect you and your patients. HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. has assured the public that the agency’s core functions will be preserved. The AAFP will hold him accountable to that promise.”
Tully said the AAFP is in conversation with the administration on its priorities as well as with Congress on its capacity to oversee the restructuring.
“As we learn more about the impacts of these changes, we will keep you informed and always fight for policies that put your patients and your practices first,” he said.
