Description
Memorial’s OB Fellowship is designed to offer training and experience in operative obstetrics and higher-risk obstetrical care for the Family Physician who wishes to practice in a rural or medically underserved area. We have one OB Fellow per academic year (July to June). The fellowship is done at Memorial Hospital of South Bend where we have the Memorial Family Medicine Residency (9 residents per class). We also have some students rotating through from the IU School of Medicine, but no other residencies. The hospital does around 3000 deliveries per year, and the residents and fellow are involved with virtually all of them. The fellow acts as junior faculty and the fellowship is designed to train Family Physicians to do surgical obstetrical procedures (primarily c-sections, tubal ligations, and OB ultrasound) as well as the management of higher risk obstetrical care. Regarding call, the fellow may do up to 5 four week blocks (out of 13 blocks per year) of in-house call on a q3 schedule. The call is 7 am to 7 am. The day post-call is off. The third day in the cycle is usually spent in doing scheduled sections in the morning and either outpatient clinic, scheduled procedures (ultrasound or surgery, for instance). The remaining 8 four week blocks are spent working doing a variety of things which would include scheduled sections (usually 2-3 each morning), working on a research project, doing some supervision of residents, doing some time with NICU and Peds, ultrasound, and a variety of other things. There is a great deal of flexibility, and each fellow helps determine what he or she would like to emphasize. The fellow works a lot with our perinatologists and selected obstetricians in the community, and has scheduled one-on-one teaching sessions focused on both high-risk management and surgical issues.
