Description
Tacoma Family Medicine’s Fellowship in Rural Family Medicine with Obstetrics is a one-year experience designed for family physicians who require broad skills to work in a rural setting. We welcome both recent residency graduates and physicians with practice experience. The program was established in 1989, and was the first of its kind in the U.S. Fellows build on prior training and enhance both their cognitive and technical skills. The curriculum is flexible enough to cater to individual needs. The Fellowship consists of 7-8 four week blocks of intensive training in high risk and operative obstetrics and 5-6 four week elective blocks. The OB curriculum emphasizes the recognition, management, and stabilization/transport of high-risk obstetrical patients. It also emphasizes development of procedural skills including (but not limited to) vacuum assisted deliveries, operative obstetrics (C-sections), and office gynecologic and contraceptive procedures. We have a unique training setting with a fellowship based high risk OB clinic, a labor deck with only family medicine residents and fellows, and a faculty with both family physician and obstetrician teachers. Elective rotations are available in most pediatric, medical, or surgical subspecialties, and are tailored by the fellow to augment individual strengths, address weaknesses, or develop new skills. Fellows may spend one elective month in a rural practice.
