Description
Our two-year Maternal & Child Health fellowship was initiated in 2003 to train leaders in Family Medicine with advanced clinical training in maternity and newborn care for rural or academic practice. The fellowship is offered in collaboration with the UNM Ob/Gyn and Pediatrics Departments Fellowship graduates will be skilled in cesarean delivery, postpartum tubal ligation, newborn resuscitation and stabilization, operative vaginal delivery, medical and surgical abortion care (if desired), vasectomy (optional), first trimester obstetrical ultrasound, colposcopy, and care of complicated obstetric patients. Fellows will also become proficient in providing substance abuse treatment during pregnancy including buprenorphine and the treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome. The fellow will attend on the Family Medicine Maternal and Child Health service, University Hospital Newborn Nursery (Level 1) and the Intermediate Care Nursery (Level 2) after supervised clinical training. Our fellows have been the primary surgeons on 130-150 cesarean deliveries during their fellowship. Fellows do public health coursework and receive a certificate in public health. Fellows also complete a research project. There is an opportunity to take classes towards an MPH during fellowship. MCH fellows participate in a core educational series, which reviews current literature on important issues in maternal and newborn care. The fellowship director, Francheska “Sevy” Gurule, MD, has completed an FP OB fellowship, as have Lawrence “Larry” Leeman, MD, MPH, Nicole Yonke, MD, MPH, Sandra Rosenfeld-O’Tool, MD, Jessica “Jessi” Goldstein, MD and Miguel Gonzales, MD. Together with UNM Ob/Gyn faculty, Drs. Gurule, Leeman, Yonke, Rosenfeld-O’Tool, Goldstein and Gonzales train the fellows in operative obstetrics. We train three to four fellows at a time. We will start accepting applications for the August spot in late June early July. We interview in the fall (August - October) and for best consideration we encourage all applications to be complete by the first week of August. If you would like an application or have any questions please contact Rebecca Raley, fellowship program specialist, at FCM-MCH@salud.unm.edu or 505-272-9304.
