Description
We have just stopped taking applications for the September 2024 -2025 year. HOW TO APPLY NEXT YEAR: Email CV and letter of interest to Dr. Richard Usatine at usatine@uthscsa.edu in January 2025. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program is designed for a board-certified or board-eligible family physician who wants to develop expertise in dermatology and wants to give back to their community by providing needed skin care for underserved populations. The fellow will improve their skills in the full range and depth of medical and surgical dermatology (excluding cosmetics). Setting: The University Health Skin Clinic opened its doors in August 2006. It has 8 exam rooms; 6 are fully equipped for ambulatory surgery. It is open 5 days a week and has an unending demand for its services. It receives consults locally and from all over South Texas. Education: The fellows train under the direct supervision of Dr. Usatine. Most learning will be hands-on caring for patients within the Skin Clinic. Participants attend learning seminars with the faculty and residents of the Division of Dermatology on Wednesday mornings and Friday afternoons. Participants are encouraged to attend the 4-day long "Skin Problems and Diseases Course" of the American Academy of Family Physicians (Dr. Usatine is the chair). Fellows will keep up their family medicine skills through working 1 – 2 evenings per week in the Student-Faculty Collaborative Clinics for the underserved. Director: Dr. Richard Usatine, Professor of Family Medicine and Dermatology. Dr. Usatine is a nationally recognized leader in dermatology education for family physicians. He is the lead author of two books that will provide some of the curriculum for this year - "Skin Surgery: A Practical Guide" and "The Color Atlas and Synopsis of Family Medicine, 3rd edition". Dr. Usatine teaches dermoscopy nationally for the AAFP and for the annual American Dermoscopy Meeting. Responsibilities: • Dermatology patient care 5 days a week (7 half-days) in the Skin Clinic (Downtown San Antonio) • Family medicine patient care and student teaching 1-2 evenings per week in the student-run free clinics for the underserved. • Assist in training residents and medical students within the Skin Clinic and student clinics (http://studentrunclinics.org/) • Writing and teaching with mentoring from Dr. Usatine. • There are no night calls or inpatient responsibilities. Completion: When the year is successfully completed the fellow will receive a certificate from the University Health that the fellowship program was completed. There are no boards or certifying exams. Qualifications: • Board-certified or board-eligible family physician • Commitment to the underserved • Spanish language fluency preferred • Interest in academics (teaching and writing) TIME LINE: The program runs from September 1 to August 31 each year. Interested applicants should contact Dr. Usatine in January of the planned start year. Those accepted will be hired by University Health, San Antonio and be employed by University Medical Associates. PLANNING AHEAD: Please reach out in person to Dr. Usatine when possible by attending his workshops and lectures at the AAFP FMX each fall.
