Description
The St. Vincent Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is a fully accredited fellowship program of the St. Vincent Family Medicine Residency in Indianapolis, IN. St. Vincent health is Indiana’s largest health care employer and is affiliated with Ascension Health – the nation’s largest not-for-profit Catholic Healthcare System. This allows medical education within St. Vincent the feel of a community based program, but the resources one would expect of an academic center. This is illustrated by the growing number of residency and fellowship programs currently based at St. Vincent in Indianapolis. The fellowship currently accepts one fellow per year through the NRMP Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship match. A key component of the education is the opportunity for the fellow to function in the role of team physician at both the high school and college level. St. Vincent Sports Performance is the sports medicine provider for a large network of area high schools as well as Marian University and Butler University. Fellow education occurs in various settings including primary care sports medicine clinic, orthopedic clinic, rehabilitation settings, primary care clinic, training rooms, sidelines, mass event coverage, and more. This provides the fellow exposure to the entire spectrum of patients ranging from adolescent to college to Pro/Olympic level to weekend warrior. Providing care to such a broad spectrum of athletes requires a broad spectrum of services. A unique feature of the St. Vincent Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is immediate access to additional allied health professionals in nutrition, pharmacology, strength and conditioning specialists, sports psychology, and neuropsychology. In addition, St. Vincent employs a large network of physical therapists and skilled ATCs with teaching experience who understand the goals of safe, timely return to sport and prevention of future injury. Procedural training is also a key component of the St. Vincent Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is the cornerstone of this training from both a diagnostic and therapeutic standpoint. By the end of the fellowship, the fellow can expect to have a basic understanding of ultrasound technique and concepts. Finally, teaching and scholarly activity are additional expectations of the sports medicine fellow. The fellow will have the opportunity for teaching of residents, medical students, and other allied health professionals. Scholarly activity – in the form of research, quality improvement, review article, case presentation, etc - is a requirement for completion of the fellowship. The fellow will be afforded time throughout the curriculum to focus on such activities.
