Prerequisites for acceptance
• Applicants must be graduates of accredited family practice residency programs (Allopathic or Osteopathic). • Applicants must be board certified or board eligible in Family Practice. • Applicants will be required to obtain medical licensure in the state of Alabama, the state of Mississippi and hold a Federal DEA certificate prior to the beginning of the fellowship. (The fellowship program will reimburse the accepted applicant for expenses related to licensure).

Description
THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY IS ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL RESIDENCIES IN THE SOUTHEAST AND THE SECOND LARGEST FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY IN THE US. The University Of Alabama Department Of Family Medicine, working together with Rush Foundation hospital Emergency Department, offers a one-year Fellowship in Emergency Medicine. The purpose of this fellowship is to provide advanced training and experience in Emergency Medicine for the family physicians who desire further training. The fellowship is twelve month training through the University of Alabama Family Medicine department and fellows will be trained at Rush foundation hospital ER at Meridian, Mississippi. We recruit 2 fellows per year Fellowship Objectives • Develop experience with the evaluation and management of simple through complex trauma patients. • Develop multitasking skills to enable efficient patient care. • Further learning in the acute management of critically ill patients. • Develop an understanding and practical experience with a busy Emergency Medicine department. • Learn focused emergency US including the FAST, ocular, undifferentiated shock exams. • Further understanding of 12 lead ECG evaluation. • Gain experience with the evaluation and management of paediatric emergencies. • Emergency Medicine Procedural Objectives: Acquire procedural competencies in endotracheal intubation, advanced airway techniques, central venous catheter insertion, arterial line insertion and monitoring, lumbar punctures, complex laceration repair, incision and drainage of cutaneous abscess, joint aspiration, slit lamp evaluation, fracture/dislocation reduction and splinting, tube thoracotomy, procedural sedation and ocular tonometry.
