Description

The dually accredited Duke/SR-AHEC Residency program is a community-based Family Medicine residency affiliated with Duke University Medical Center and Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. The program is based at the Southern Regional Area Health Education Center (SR-AHEC), and is part of a network of AHEC Centers throughout North Carolina. Here, we offer the better of two worlds--the expertise of faculty representing Duke, Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, the University of North Carolina (UNC), and Campbell University and an independent, non-competitive community setting in which to learn. We were the first residency program in North Carolina to have dual accreditation by both AOA and ACGME. Residents are welcomed as practicing physicians by Cape Fear Valley Health System, (CFVHS) local physicians, and the community. Residents practice in an underserved, nine-county area. The diverse, self-selected patient base represents a broad spectrum of medical problems, like those encountered in a typical family practice- from adult medicine and pediatrics to obstetrics and gynecology. Residents learn to master a variety of situations, from inpatient care at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center to outpatient care in rural areas. Residents receive extensive resources and the personal support of faculty who are both accessible and encouraging. Competition is not a part of the learning environment. Patient loads are designed to increase responsibility, while the reasonable call schedule allows residents to lead a flexible lifestyle. SR-AHEC is a friendly place, with faculty and residents joining in social and recreational activities. While your educational experience will take place primarily at the Duke / SR-AHEC Family Medicine Center and CFVHS, you may also participate in rotations at Scotland Memorial Hospital, rural family practices, and county health department clinics. Dynamic Faculty With a faculty-to-resident ratio of 1:3, individual interaction is both available and encouraged. The diverse faculty holds Duke, Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, University of North Carolina, and Campbell University appointments and represents all disciplines pertinent to family medicine-internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and integrated clinical pharmacology and behavioral sciences. Community attending physicians and preceptors also offer invaluable learning experiences. Outstanding Facilities The SR-AHEC Family Medicine Center is a full-service outpatient clinic. On-site support encompasses radiology, pharmacology, behavioral sciences, nursing, medical records, and laboratory. The Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, a progressive 776 bed hospital, serves all SR-AHEC inpatients. Services include neonatal, cardiac, medical and surgical intensive care including robotic surgery, a full range of obstetrical and gynecologic care, emergency department services, radiation therapy, cancer treatment and a rehabilitation center. Diagnostic facilities include cardiac catheterization, MRI and PET/CAT scanners. Postgraduate Programs • Annual Stipend: PGY-1: $51,679, PGY-2: $53,630and PGY-3: $55.653, as well as a data plan monthly stipend • Benefits: malpractice insurance, moving stipend, disability, and term life insurance; medical and dental insurance for the entire family; hospital coats furnished, free parking available, fees paid for PALS, ACLS and BLS; residents are entitled to four weeks paid time off annually; maternity/paternity leave policy; paid medical license and board examination fees.
