Description
One- to two-week trips usually to the Caribbean or to Central American countries to learn about local health needs and infrastructure. Clinical services are provided to local residents with the assistance of non-governmental organizations. Residents may pursue other international opportunities with program approval as well. Field experience
Under the supervision of either residency faculty, other U.S. -based faculty or local physicians, residents participate in clinical care of patients in underserved areas. Usually, this is in temporary clinic facilities. We are assisted on site by local organizations made up of nationals, expatriates, or a combination of the two. Duration may be from 7 to 10 days for residency-sponsored programs. Living conditions are generally quite basic. We are working on developing a returning experience to the same area each year, with continuity in community health development.
Didactics
Pre-trip reading is assigned, with discussion of relevant clinical topics during pre-trip planning.
