Program Description

One of our core missions at Nellis FMR is to mentor students and young physicians to help them foster skills unique to Family Medicine. Third year medical students rotating with us get a broad introduction into family medicine, focusing on common clinic problems. Opportunities for exposure to multiple procedures (colonoscopy, vasectomy, colposcopy, osteopathic manipulative therapy, medical acupuncture, cardiac treadmills, and dermatologic biopsies) as well as inpatient work and obstetrics are also included. Fourth year medical students get a similarly broad experience, with additional opportunities to experience flight medicine or other areas of the medical group unique to Nellis AFB, "Home of the Fighter Pilot". We also offer 4th year Acting Internships. Any medical student from any school in the U.S. can rotate with us, although we preferentially place students with active duty service commitments (HPSP or USUHS). We highly encourage anyone interested in our residency to arrange a rotation with us; of note, only students with active duty service commitments can apply to the Air Force for a resident position. Planning ahead is essential, not only to choose a month that fits your schedule, but also to ensure we create a training affiliation agreement with your school if one is not current; we recommend contacting us 9 months in advance. There are also opportunities to rotate in other departments in our facility. We are affiliated with the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine and also receive several 3rd year students from nearby Touro University.
