Program Description

Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH) Family Medicine Residency Program is a graduate medical education program of Ballad Health and is also one of VCOM's Osteopathic Medical Network of Excellence in Education (OMNEE) programs. JMH and Ballad Health are committed to providing advanced, innovative, and specialized training in Osteopathic Family Medicine and Manipulative Treatment to the osteopathic physician. The objective/mission of the residency program is to provide comprehensive training in osteopathic family medicine and manipulative treatment to the osteopathic physician by offering a longitudinal training experience that will afford the trainee the opportunity to become skillful in providing all-inclusive care to patients of all ages. Residency program graduates will be prepared to achieve certification by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP). The program focuses on teaching the importance of providing comprehensive and compassionate medical care to patients through attending physicians leading by example and structuring instruction to equip the trainee with the skills needed to achieve all core competencies. JMH is a not-for-profit, 116-bed modern medical facility dedicated to bringing quality health care to the residents of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. The hospital is jointly owned by Ballad Health and Johnston Memorial Hospital. Ballad Health primary care sites are in varying stages of being recognized as Patient Centered Medical Homes by NCQA and are actively working towards further development of team based approach to care. Most of the primary care sites offer services to patients across the full spectrum of age (from newborn to geriatric). Pediatric care is also provided to patients by pediatricians in the outpatient setting and at Niswonger Children's Hospital in Johnson City, TN. Niswonger Children's Hospital serves more than 200,000 children in a four-state, 29-county region. It is home to one of only six St. Jude Affiliate Clinics. It has 69-beds and 20 pediatric specialties. It offers the only pediatric-specific emergency department in the region, a 39-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and a 10-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. MSHA provides comprehensive care to patients including rehabilitation services. Ballad Health offers these services at eleven rehabilitation facilities, one which is located in Abingdon, VA. This program provides a great opportunity to train in family medicine in the beautiful, historic town of Abingdon, VA in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. *Clarification regarding elective rotations listed above (as number of months varies per year of training) - Electives are as follows: OGME-1=1, OGME-2=1, OGME-3=2*
