    Be Recognized for Your Exemplary Work

    The prestigious AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education honors a select number of commendable residents for their outstanding leadership, civic involvement, exemplary patient care, and aptitude for and interest in family medicine.

    Since its founding in 1952, more than 1000 resident recipients have received this distinguished honor—a number that grows proudly each year. Awards are provided for second-year graduate training only. In addition to the recognition, recipients will receive a $2,500 scholarship, 3 nights hotel accommodations, airfare, and registration for the 2024 Family Medicine Experience. This year FMX is September 24–28 in Phoenix, AZ.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Current AAFP Resident Member. (Not a member? Join today!)
    • Eligible to practice family medicine in the United States.
    • Eligible members in their 2nd year of training at an ACGME-approved family medicine residency.

    Criteria for Selection

    • Demonstrated leadership ability.
    • Community involvement/social commitment.
    • Exemplary patient care and interpersonal relationships.



    Step 1

    Complete the application materials (including):

    • Application Form/Professional Activity Plans
    • Personal Statement (2-page maximum)
    • Resume/CV Completion of this form is required

    Step 2

    Submit completed references forms from:

    (One reference form from each representative is required and may be submitted by representative or applicant.)
