Sept. 28, 2023, News Staff — Thousands of family physicians will be in Chicago next month for the 2023 Family Medicine Experience. Packed with more CME, more value and more detailed workshops, this year’s event offers an unmatched opportunity to learn and connect. There’s still time to register to avoid missing out!
The schedule for this year’s FMX, Oct. 26-29 at the McCormick West Convention Center, is built to give members more of what they asked for from the AAFP’s premier event. Highlights for attendees this year include
“Members come to FMX year after year looking to reignite the joy that led them to family medicine and to learn the latest evidence-based information, so we filled this year’s lineup with extra opportunities for all of that,” said Margot Savoy, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP, the AAFP’s senior vice president for education, inclusiveness, and physician well-being. “There’s so much outstanding content that the event grew from three days to four to give everyone more time to take it all in.”
The 2023 FMX includes unique opportunities to experience Chicago’s vibrant spirit, starting with Windy City food and entertainment at the Taste of Chicago grand opening of the Xchange expo hall. The legendary Second City improv crew is polishing up an original musical tribute to family medicine and will bring more laughter to the main stage each day.
Story Highlights
The big draw to the FMX main stage events, as always, will be the expertise of family medicine champions. This year, attendees will hear from
After hours on Oct. 28, family physicians and their families will have the Museum of Science and Industry to themselves for an exclusive evening in the Western Hemisphere’s largest science museum.
Attendees with children can let their kids enjoy arts and crafts, games and meals at Camp AAFP for a special FMX rate throughout the conference.
The abundance of available CME might make it difficult to choose what to include in your schedule, but FMX On Demand allows learners to revisit lectures and see sessions they didn’t get to in person.
And there are plenty of options for in-person learning in Chicago.
Evidence-based updates across 22 major categories will cover topics such as lifestyle medicine, substance use disorder, long COVID, respiratory syncytial virus, as well as updates on chronic diseases from heart failure to diabetes.
Those looking for a focused, deep dive into a single topic can select coordinated tracks carefully created based on member input. These themed sessions will immerse attendees in targeted career, practice and clinical topics that include behavioral and mental health, brain health, global health, leadership, payment, physician well-being, and team-based care.
Attendees can learn new skills in clinical procedure workshops on topics such as point-of-care ultrasound, therapeutic needling and many more. This year’s workshops include more time for hands-on demonstrations and practice with expert instructors by using a flipped classroom approach that offers e-learning before FMX begins.
Extended, problem-based learning opportunities are tailored to those who learn best in the company of friends. Small groups will work collaboratively through cases that reinforce key concepts from a lecture session. Guided by expert faculty and enhanced with peer-to-peer interactions, it will be like getting a curbside consult on some of the toughest cases before they present in clinic, including chronic asthma, pediatric sports injuries and mitochondrial medicine.
The education available at FMX goes beyond CME. Members can learn from their colleagues and others in member interest group meetings, the Xchange expo hall, open discussion meet-ups, a new-physician happy hour, and meet-and-greets with main stage presenters. The AAFP has also partnered with Equity Commons to offer an innovative, virtual-reality educational experience about implicit bias.
Registrants can also attend the pre-conference AAFP Global Health Summit Oct. 25-26 at no additional charge for more evidence-based learning and peer networking with a focus on equity and decolonialization in global health.
Family physicians will find resources to advance their careers, improve their practices, meet with experts from industry-leading companies, learn about AAFP resources and advocacy, and unwind, all at the Xchange expo hall.
The Office of the Future is returning with solutions to reduce physicians’ administrative burden and optimize their practices, including tips for transitioning to value-based care.
Sessions at the Career Pavilion will help family physicians with career milestones ranging from finding employment to taking on leadership roles to retirement. Attendees can also get free professional headshot photos.
Representatives in the Sponsored Learning area will share information about products and services to help family physicians enhance their clinical expertise, grow their practices and develop their careers.
And because self-care is crucial to physicians’ well-being, attendees will want to be sure to spend some time at the Xchange just unwinding — snuggling a pup at the Furry Friends area, melting into a free massage at Rejuvenation Station, or playing a game for prizes.
