Oct. 5, 2023, News Staff — Time is running out for physicians participating in the Quality Payment Program’s Merit-based Incentive Payment System to appeal penalties assessed — perhaps in error — for performance year 2022.
CMS published 2022 MIPS performance feedback in August. The final score determines whether MIPS-eligible clinicians receive a negative, neutral or positive payment adjustment to their Medicare Part B payments in 2024.
An FPM Getting Paid blog post explains how physicians can view their feedback, final score and 2024 payment adjustment on the QPP site, as well as how to file an appeal, which CMS calls a “targeted review.” MIPS-eligible clinicians, groups, virtual groups and advanced payment model entities (along with their designated support staff or authorized third-party intermediary) have until 8 p.m. ET on Oct. 9 to request a targeted review.

The Academy this month called on CMS to use its authority “to refrain from raising the MIPS performance threshold and prevent physicians in small and medium practices from being unfairly penalized.” That advocacy was part of detailed guidance the AAFP offered the agency in response to the 2024 Medicare physician fee schedule and QPP proposed rule.
