    Students and Residents:

    The AFP Photo Contest is intended to encourage students and residents to share stories through photographs about how you use the American Family Physician (AFP) journal. Any aspect of the journal can be discussed, including AFP's review articles, covers, and other features such as practice guidelines, photo quizzes,  algorithms, figures, etc. Photos can feature individuals or groups, ordinary or extraordinary locations, and have a humorous or serious tone. The sky’s the limit, and we look forward to seeing your creative submissions! The winning photo will be published in AFP.

    2024 Winner

    Contest Rules

    • The 2024 AFP Photo Contest begins on April 1, 2024, and ends on May 15, 2024, at 5 p.m. CT. Winners will be notified by June 1, 2024.
    • Limit one (1) submission per person.
    • All submissions are welcome, but eligible entrants must be a family medicine medical student or resident located in the United States, the District of Columbia, or other territories under U.S. jurisdiction.
    • Commercially produced photographs will be disqualified.
    • Winners will be selected based on creativity, originality, and clarity in demonstrating how they use the journal.
    • By submitting your photograph, you are giving AFP permission to share it though the AFP website and social networking platforms.
    • Contest entrants agree to abide by the terms of these rules and by the decisions of the judges, which are final.
    • The prizes include a one-year print subscription of AFP (approximate retail value: $190), a $150 gift card OR registration to the AAFP 2024 National Conference (approximate retail value: $200), and publication of the winning photo in the print and online versions of AFP and through AFP social media channelsWinners will be responsible for paying any fees or taxes associated with the prizes.
    • If a photo includes a recognizable person (other than the entrant), the entrant is responsible for obtaining permission from the individual subject (or the subject’s legal guardian if the subject is a minor) prior to submitting the photo for the contest. If applicable, entrants must verify upon submission that they have received this permission by emailing afpedit@aafp.org: "I have reviewed the contest rules and obtained consent from each and every person appearing in the photo for their image to be included in this submitted photo."
    • No copyrighted materials (e.g., artwork, photos) or trademarks may be included in the photo unless the entrant owns the copyright or has a license to use the materials for this contest.
    • Contest entrants retain all rights in their photos; however, by entering the contest, they grant the AAFP and its designees a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publicly display, distribute, and reproduce the photos in any media now existing or later developed for advertising and promotion of American Family Physician and for any other lawful purpose. Entrants also grant AAFP permission to use their name, city, and state/territory in any announcement to the public of the contest results. Any photo reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. 
    • The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law.

    How to Submit

    • Photos may be submitted by email to afpedit@aafp.org or by tagging AFPjournal on social media (X/Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook) with the hashtag #AFPjournalphotocontest.
    • Submissions must include the phrase "I have reviewed the contest rules and obtained consent from each and every person appearing in the photo for their image to be included in this submitted photo."
    • Submissions should include a caption or short description (no more than 280 characters with spaces) about what is being shown in the photograph.
    • Limit one (1) submission per person.
    • Commercially produced photographs will be disqualified.
    • Note that by submitting your photograph to the competition, you are giving AFP permission to share it though the AFP website and social networking platforms.
    • All submissions are welcome, but contest winners must be a medical student or resident in family medicine.

    Awards

It has been a wonderful way to connect with each other, especially during COVID-19. These monthly discussions have also connected Family Physicians across the country – from California to Boston!"
