AFP recently earned more kudos: the prestigious Gold Circle Award presented by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). For the past 21 years, ASAE's Communications Section has sponsored an awards program that recognizes outstanding accomplishments of American associations in the field of communications.

Last year, for the first time, AFP submitted an entry in the category of scientifi/ducational articles, which earned the trophy for the best article published in an educational, scientific or technical association publication. Articles were judged on the basis of success in meeting the publication's objectives, the effectiveness of communicating purpose, the development of theme and the overall quality of writing.

What was the article that won this distinct honor? Turn to the cover article on page 1531 of the April 1, 1998 issue, and you'll find the winner: “Diagnosis and Treatment of Prostate Cancer,” by John Naitoh, M.D., University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine (UCLA); Rebecca L. Zeiner, M.D., Southern California Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, West Los Angeles, and Jean B. Dekernion, M.D., UCLA. The article provides an overview of prostate cancer and the controversies surrounding its detection and treatment.

AFP strives to provide state-of-the-art updates on the diagnosis and treatment of clinical conditions managed by family physicians, bringing readers balanced discussions of the strengths and weaknesses of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, along with strong supporting references, and evidence-based guidelines or at least consensus views when possible. Although the jury is still out on the best strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, the article by Naitoh and colleagues does an admirable job of identifying factors that physicians and their patients will need to consider when navigating through this most difficult decision process.
