AFP’s editors will be standing by to meet with you at the upcoming Annual Scientific Assembly of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). This year’s assembly, which will be held in conjunction with the 17th World Conference of Family Doctors, is scheduled for October 13–17, in Orlando, Fla. If you don’t attend the meeting regularly, you might consider going this year because of the unique opportunities offered by the intersection of these two meetings. Family physicians from all over the world will be gathering to share ideas, earn CME, and help shape the future of this far-reaching specialty of medicine. A lot will be happening at the meeting, but we would appreciate it if you would take just a minute to visit with us at the AFP booth in the exhibit hall.
At the booth, we will be asking readers to fill out a short survey that will let us know if we’re still on track serving your needs. We’ve recently introduced some new series in the journal, including “STEPS,” which are short reviews of new drugs covering safety, tolerability, efficacy, price, and simplicity; “Clinical Inquiries,” which offer evidence-based answers to common clinical questions; “POEMs,” which offer abstracts of studies offering patient-oriented evidence that matters; and “Point-of-Care Guides,” which offer evidence-based tools to use in practice. We’ve added short summaries to “Cochrane for Clinicians” and merged “Clinical Briefs” with “Practice Guidelines.” We also have started labeling key recommendations in clinical review articles using the new SOR taxonomy introduced in the February 1, 2004, issue. On top of those changes, we’ve introduced a new look for the journal, starting with the July 1, 2004, issue. This would be a great time for you to stop by and let us know how we’re doing.
AFP’s editor, Jay Siwek, M.D., and Barry Weiss, M.D., editor of Family Medicine, will be presenting a workshop for new authors at the annual AAFP assembly. Drs. Siwek and Weiss will help authors determine the basic steps in writing and preparation of the manuscript, understand what happens to the manuscript after it is received in the editorial office, and respond effectively to comments from editors and reviewers. The workshop focuses on clinical review and research articles, and it is aimed at novice and experienced authors. For authors wanting to publish clinical reviews in AFP, we offer instructions online in the Authors Guide athttps://www.aafp.org/afp.
Other medical editors of AFP are active at assembly and will be presenting CME sessions, including Dr. Barbara Apgar, who will discuss issues in women’s health, and Dr. Richard Sadovsky, who will present sessions on urinalysis and erectile dysfunction. Many other presenters at the assembly—too many to name—have been regular contributors to AFP, and we hope to see many of them, and you, at assembly. If you can’t make it, though, please remember you can give us feedback any time, via the AFP reader feedback card available in the “Clinical Quiz” section of the first issue of each month, AFP online (https://www.aafp.org/afp), or e-mail (afpedit@aafp.org).
