This is the second year we are presenting the “American Family Physician Article of the Year Award,” which is selected based on the most online views and highest ratings from the AFP editors. From 1986 to 2001, AFP presented the Walter Kemp Award annually, and we are pleased to bring back the practice of honoring authors for their excellent scholarly contributions to family medicine.

The 2023 AFP Article of the Year award goes to Drs. Andrew J. Goodbred and Robert C. Langan for their article “Chronic Kidney Disease: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment,” which was published in the December 2023 issue. Because chronic kidney disease affects roughly 15% of the U.S. population with a steadily increasing disease burden globally, this article provides key updates for patient care. It includes screening recommendations; using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration creatinine equation without the race variable to calculate eGFR with confirmatory measuring of serum cystatin C; managing comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, anemia, and bone mineral disorders; and referral indications.

The 2023 award will be presented this month at the Congress of Delegates Award Luncheon at the FMX Conference in Phoenix, Ariz.

Dr. Goodbred graduated from Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, Philadelphia, Penn., and St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency—Bethlehem Campus, Bethlehem, Penn. He serves as program director for St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency—Anderson Campus, Easton, Penn., and clinical associate faculty for Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Dr. Goodbred is board certified in Family Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine, and he enjoys the role of team physician for his local school district. His clinical and educational interests include lifestyle medicine for patients of all ages, sports medicine, physician well-being, and mentorship.

Dr. Langan earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y., and completed his family medicine residency at Naval Hospital Pensacola in Pensacola, Fla. Following 4 years assigned to Naval Hospital Cherry Point on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., he joined the faculty of St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency in Bethlehem, Penn. For the past 6 years, he has been the program director of St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency—Sacred Heart Campus in Allentown, Penn. He is an adjunct professor in the department of Family and Community Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Penn.
