    Editor-in-Chief

    Sumi Makkar Sexton, MD, FAAFP, is a professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. She has also served as editor-in-chief of American Family Physician since 2018, and has been involved in editing the journal since the late 1990s. Dr. Sexton is president of Premier Primary Care Physicians, a private family practice in Arlington, Virginia, that she founded in 2003. She currently spends half of her time in clinical medicine with the remaining spent on editing, teaching, and practice administration. 

    Associate Medical Editors

    Ryan D. Kauffman, MD, FAAFP, CCFP, is part of the Erie Shores Family Health Team in Leamington, Ontario, Canada. He leads various performance improvement initiatives and has worked nationally in board certification support for family physicians. Dr. Kauffman's clinical interests include ambulatory medicine and office-based procedures.

    Karl T. Rew, MD, is a clinical associate professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Urology at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. He is the director of faculty development for the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Rew teaches medical students and residents, provides patient care in the Japanese Family Health Program, and has clinical interests in urology and urgent care. 

    Kate Rowland, MD, FAAFP, is the vice chair of education and an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Rush Medical College at Rush University in Chicago. Her clinical interests include women’s health and pediatrics, and her academic interests include undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education. 

    Barry D. Weiss, MD, FAAFP, is a professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. He has worked as an editor for much of his career, including serving as editor of STFM’s Family Medicine for 18 years. He has been on the editorial staff of FP Essentials since 2000, served as medical editor from 2007 to 2024, and is an associate editor for American Family Physician. Dr. Weiss is the author of more than 195 journal articles and several medical textbooks. He enjoys working with both experienced and novice authors.

    Editorial Board Members

    S. Lindsey Clarke, MD, FAAFP, is a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC) and associate program director of the Self Regional Healthcare Family Medicine Residency in Greenwood, South Carolina. He directs medical student rotations and is chair of the continuing medical education committee at the medical center. Dr. Clarke’s main clinical and teaching interests include hypertension and care of medically underserved patients.

    Joel J. Heidelbaugh, MD, FAAFP, FACG, is a clinical professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Urology at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. He is the director of medical student education and the clerkship director in the Department of Family Medicine. He serves as the consulting editor for Primary Care: Clinics in Office Practice, as an associate editor for Conn’s Current Therapy, and on the editorial board of the American Board of Family Medicine National Journal Club. Dr. Heidelbaugh is the creator, editor, and co-author of Clinical Men’s Health: Evidence in Practice, the first evidence-based textbook on men’s health. He has co-authored guidelines with the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Urological Association.

    Robert C. Langan, MD, FAAFP, is the program director for St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency Program-Sacred Heart in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He is an adjunct professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. Langan also serves as a senior author for the Core Content Review of Family Medicine.

    Brian Z. Rayala, MD, FAAFP, is a professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine (SOM) in Chapel Hill. He is core faculty at the UNC SOM family medicine residency program and fellowship director of the Career Development Fellowship in Family Medicine Procedures. Dr. Rayala also serves as associate editor for Essential Evidence. His clinical interests include dermatology, primary care surgery, and wound medicine.
