We need your help to keep FPM practical, authoritative, readable and, above all, useful.

Fam Pract Manag. 2006;13(10):14

For a relatively small journal, Family Practice Management has a pretty healthy appetite for peer reviewers. Given the nature of our content and our mission, we like to have four to six reviewers for each article where most peer-reviewed journals have two. The reason? FPM is much more reader oriented than the typical research journal.

In addition to reviewers with special knowledge to comment on the accuracy and timeliness of article content, we need reviewers who can represent the general readership in commenting on how interesting and especially how useful the article is. While a research report can be important without being immediately useful to the practicing physician, an FPM article that wasn't useful to a significant segment of our readership would be nothing. Consequently, we solicit reviews for a given article both from reviewers who have relevant expertise and from reviewers who don't – or whose “relevant expertise” is no more than a clear sense of what they need to know about the subject as practicing family physicians.

Since we involve so many reviewers per article, we need a relatively large review panel to avoid overworking those who are kind enough to volunteer. After all, we can offer them nothing but our heartfelt thanks (see below). Moreover, our need for reviewers has been exacerbated by an increasing flow of manuscript submissions.

If you would be interested in reviewing articles for FPM, we could certainly use your help. If you have special knowledge in any of the subject areas FPM deals with, wonderful; if not, that's fine too, as long as you are a practicing family physician with an interest in the nonclinical aspects of practice. As I implied above, we are acutely conscious of the generosity of our volunteer reviewers, and we try not to overwork them. Depending on a reviewer's areas of special knowledge, we might ask for two to five reviews a year – always on the understanding that every reviewer may have to decline a request from time to time.

To volunteer, just send an e-mail to us at fpmedit@aafp.org. We'll e-mail you back a reviewer information form to complete and return by fax, mail or e-mail. Once we have your information in our reviewer database, we'll start looking for review assignments for you. We look forward to adding you to our review team and together making FPM an even more useful resource for family physicians.
