Fam Pract Manag. 2007;14(3):10

I said recently in this space that FPM can offer its peer reviewers nothing but our heartfelt thanks for the work they do to help maintain the quality of the journal. That's not quite true. For reviewers who are members of the AAFP, we can offer both thanks and CME credit. It has taken longer than I had hoped to get to this point, but for each FPM manuscript review completed, a member can self-report up to 3 Prescribed credits, with a maximum of 15 credits earned from peer review per year.

Given the number of loyal and productive reviewers we have had over the years before we were able to offer this incentive, I know that our reviewers are motivated by a desire to be helpful to their colleagues rather than any desire for personal gain, but I can't help feeling that they deserve more reward than we have traditionally been able to give. I'm delighted that we can offer this token now.

Shortly, we will be e-mailing all current members of the FPM peer review panel to explain how to claim the credit they earn. If you are a member of the panel and don't receive the e-mailed instructions in the next month or so, please let us know by sending us an e-mail at fpmedit@ aafp.org. And if you're not a member of the panel but would like to be, read on.

Would you like to become an FPM peer reviewer?

We could use your help, particularly if you have special knowledge in any of the areas FPM covers. But even if you don't - even if your primary qualification is that you're a practicing family physician acutely aware of what you need to know — FPM needs you. We solicit reviews from both subject-matter experts and “experts in front-line family medicine,” because we want to make sure that every article in FPM is not just accurate but also relevant to the needs of practicing family physicians. And now you can get more out of reviewing for FPM than a sense of satisfaction and the gratitude of the editors. Now there's something in it for you.
