This issue marks two important milestones for Family Practice Management. First, we welcome FPM's new medical editor, Kenneth G. Adler, MD, MMM. Ken has been making his mark on FPM for many years, as an author of articles about electronic health records and other health information technology, a peer reviewer, and more recently a member of the FPM Editorial Advisory Board. We are excited about the opportunity to work more closely with Ken and help implement his vision for FPM.

Ken is a family physician who sees patients full-time at a four-provider office in Tucson, Ariz., where he is also president of a physician-owned, primary care medical group, Arizona Community Physicians, and medical director for the group, responsible primarily for information technology and quality. The group, which includes 124 physicians at more than 50 sites, combines elements of solo and small group private practice with elements of a large physician organization. The doctors own their equipment and own or rent their buildings, yet they are also shareholders in the group and jointly own two imaging centers and a lab.

Ken has led his own office to recognition as a level-3 patient-centered medical home twice, first under the National Committee for Quality Assurance's 2008 standards and again under the 2011 standards. Ken's breadth of knowledge and experience will be invaluable to us as we work to develop content that helps family physicians build more rewarding practices and improve patient care.

The second milestone is about the future and the past: As Ken points out in his editorial, this is FPM's 20th year of publication. The American Academy of Family Physicians launched FPM to “help family physicians adapt to changing times and achieve leadership positions in the evolving health care system” that the health care reform efforts of the 1990s were expected to bring. Almost 20 years later, our challenge is much the same. With Ken's guidance, we look forward to the next 20 years.
