• The right way to leave your job

When it’s time to say goodbye to a job in which you have invested significant time and energy, there’s a right way and a wrong way to end things.

    Dos

    • Do prepare emotionally. If you have proper discussions, express appreciation, and clear the air before you leave, you’ll pave the way for a smoother exit.
    • Do tie up loose ends. Leave your team in as good a position as you can by bringing your duties to completion and teaching others what they need to know for a smooth transition.
    • Do let go of regrets. The negative aspects of why you are leaving should no longer be part of your conversation. Let them go, unless they propel you to a better place.

    Don’ts

    • Don't wait too long. Fear and other emotions can cause you to delay your goodbye for too long. Although you don’t want to announce it too early, you do need to give those around you enough notice that they can process it in a healthy manner.
    • Don't overdo it. If you over-complicate or drag out your goodbye, those around you will start to feel uncomfortable. Instead, keep it short and sweet.
    • Don’t be unrealistic about the future. Idealizing a new move, retirement, or life change is easy to do, but to save yourself from disappointment, be realistic yet optimistic about the future.
