    This position is elected at the AAFP National Conference and candidates should plan to attend. See below for details on this role, as well as the current travel calendar associated with serving in this position.

    Be involved with high-level decision-making on a nonprofit board of trustees and receive mentoring from established leaders of the AAFP Foundation. The AAFP Foundation advances the values of family medicine through humanitarian, educational, and scientific philanthropy dedicated to improving health.

    Responsibilities

    Term: September 1, 2025-August 31, 2026

    • Is a full voting member of the AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees
    • Serves as liaison to the AAFP Commission on Education including two of its subcommittees, the Subcommittee on Resident and Student Issues, and the Subcommittee on National Conference Planning (Includes one in-person meeting each year and virtual meetings quarterly and sometimes monthly)
    • Attends two Foundation Board meetings following election and confirmation by the AAFP Foundation Board
    • Attends National Conference and summer and winter cluster meetings
    • Provides input into potential Foundation programming directed towards residents
    • Serves as the Foundation’s advocate with the resident membership
    • Serves on at least three Foundation committees as assigned by the Foundation President

    Application Summary

    Candidates for this position are elected at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. Candidates should plan to attend the entirety of the conference. Candidates are required to be nominated at the conference, deliver a 2 - 3 minute speech, participate in a candidate Q&A, and, if elected, participate in a new officer orientation Saturday afternoon of the conference.

    Eligibility Criteria

    • May be in any year of residency
    • Does not need previous experience in a national AAFP leadership position
    • Must be nominated during a congress business session at the National Conference by an eligible member of the congress. Review the candidate fact sheet for complete details

    Candidates should familiarize themselves with AAFP Foundation Programs.

    Time commitment away from residency: Approximately 15-18 days (includes weekends) for travel and attendance at meetings.

    Funding: Provided for meeting attendance according to AAFP Foundation guidelines.
