The AAFP established the National Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Network in 1995 to aid communication and the exchange of best practices between FMIG students and faculty leaders across the country. The network consists of student FMIG leaders and campus-based faculty, five appointed Regional Coordinators, one elected National Coordinator, a liaison to the Latino Medical Student Association, and a liaison to the Student National Medical Association. These coordinators serve as consultants to and resources for FMIGs.

Develop the family medicine workforce and advance the specialty of family medicine by strengthening current and aspiring medical students to be prepared for and choose to pursue a career in family medicine in the U.S.

The AAFP hosts an online community to support local FMIG efforts. Join this student-only space today to stay updated on the latest news and opportunities for FMIGs, plus ask questions, and share ideas with fellow medical student leaders in FMIGs. A separate community is also available for faculty and staff FMIG advisors and supporters.
Locally and nationally, there are many FMIG leadership opportunities. Leadership in an FMIG or with the FMIG Network can help you extend your network, share your passion, and build your CV for residency applications.
Joining the FMIG leadership team at your school will give you experience in a variety of areas, plus help you develop your strengths. Check with current leaders, or the faculty FMIG advisor, to learn how to run for a position.
The FMIG Network is led by a group of eight students who serve as coordinators and liaisons. All AAFP medical student members are eligible to apply for a position. Learn more about the application cycles and responsibilities associated with these roles.
